Top 15 Final Fantasy Characters - #9: Edgar Roni Figaro (Final Fantasy VI)
"We’ll choose whatever path we want, without any regrets."
When people think of Edgar, it seems like his womanizing tendencies and wacky lines are the first things that usually come to mind. (“He’d slit his momma’s throat for a nickel!”) I’m not going to lie, that side of him is really oddly endearing. I usually don’t like that type of character, but somehow for Edgar, it just works.
But of course, there’s much more to him than that exterior. He’s a brilliant inventor, the kind of talent you really wouldn’t expect from a king. When you find out about his decision to let Sabin go live the life he wanted, that really adds to it. He took on a responsibility he didn’t want, that he didn’t have to take. But despite that sacrifice of sorts, he absolutely refuses to fail as king of Figaro or to give up the little things he truly loves. In fact, he utilizes those talents in truly unique ways to keep his country and people intact through catastrophe.
It’s those numerous facets to his character that really draw me to Edgar. He’s comical, but not all crack. He’s brilliant and eccentric, but also responsible and uncompromising on his ideals. And he’s willing to sacrifice for the sake of others’ happiness, but not a helpless angstbucket as a result of that.
(Of course, on top of that, he’s ever a gentleman, and absolutely adorable with Terra. Both elements definitely help.)
