I originally planned this joke with Lyon too, but he didn’t fit very well into the rhythm. Sorry, Lyon. Here he is for those of you who care.

Is it just me, or is Soren just really … overhyped as a character?
I’m kind of* curious as to why he’s so popular in the fandom; though it’s obvious in some regards. Probably being part of the main OTP probably has something to do with it, as well as the Draco in Leather Pants trope. And then there’s the fact it’s a lot more fun/easy to ‘relate’ with the woobie-ish characters (a reoccurring habit among fandoms).
Eh.
I guess I’m just slightly disappointed that more love isn’t spread around the other characters when there’s just so many of them. Nasir, y’guys.
i like Nasir better than Soren, does that count?
I like Soren better as a unit if only because I never use dragons because my only laguz ever is Ranulf C’:
???
He’s really neither overhyped nor overrated, because he’s a genuinely well-written and complex character — it’s not like he’s one of those weirdly popular yet shallow characters
(I am mostly talking about certain FE13 characters here… …). There really is a lot of depth to him.For fandom to apply the “Draco in Leather Pants” trope to a character isn’t a good thing at all, though! It essentially means they’re throwing most of the character’s personality out of a window… which is admittedly a thing that tends to happen to a lot of popular characters. D:
But I do feel like there are a lot of other FE characters who get plenty of love, too, especially here on tumblr? Nasir is indeed rather overshadowed, though, which is a bit of a shame…
Mostly re: OP —
I suspect that the amount of dramatic information you get about a character and the size of his/her fanbase is related exponentially. But I haven’t really been in other fandoms for awhile so that’s nothing but my gut feeling.
Soren really is favored by the game itself, though. Of all the characters in Tellius, you get the most detail about Soren’s backstory, the kind of person he is, and even the circumstances of his birth. Soren is perhaps the only character whose entire life can be accounted for almost year by year via canon. (The only ambiguities are whether he changed hands for the first time at 2, 3, or 4, and when he reunited with Ike.)
The game’s own informational bias is honestly kind of weird, but not unprecedented — the developers seemed to have a similar affinity for Fin in FE4, going so far as to base FE5 off a concept story that’s basically half about Fin’s feelings.
There is something to be said for the appeal of sad, tragic “woobie” characters… but it certainly isn’t universal, or I would be rolling around in beautiful Nageki art all the time. Instead, Hatoful fandom likes Shuu, the creepy psychopathic doctor.
(Fwiw, Soren’s depiction in fanfic is often overly PMSy or angry instead of following uke tropes, which makes me suspect that his appeal is not solely based out of his tragic squish appeal. There’s a certain amount of Leather Pantsing going on, but I think that’s a symptom rather than a cause of the “disease”.
Though I grant you that being part of Tellius’s biggest OTP will definitely draw in a huge demographic.)
Yeah, what Ammie said. The moe aspect is exaggerated in perception, because it stands out as “wrong”, but in truth, most Soren stuff leans toward the spiny-angry, maybe tsundere.
But canon definitely favors him, the same way it favors Ninian among non-lords in FE7. (Not that fandom really reflects that, but eh.) Across canons, though, larger fandom patterns tend to latch onto one lord and one love interest. FE7’s got Lyn and Kent or Mark. FE8’s got Eirika and Seth. And 9/10 have Ike and Soren.
(Nothing before 7 really has a collection of work or discussion in English large enough to decipher, though.)
Personally, if I were to pick a character who’s overhyped in Tellius — really, in FE as a whole? It’d be the other half of said pairing. Ike is great and all, but he gets a whole lot of credit for being “unique” among lords when… really, in most ways, he isn’t. The outline’s been there since, uh, FE2. Soren, at least, brings things to the Waifish Magic Love Interest trope that Diadora, Ninian, Sophia, et al don’t even touch.
How I feel about this character: I have a possibly irrational love of Leonardo. I don’t know, I feel like his personality really does come across in what you see of him in-game — haters to the left and all that. Then finding out the backstory in the dev notes? Yeah, definitely a sucker for it.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Edward, Micaiah sometimes sshh, basically anyone in crack land
My non-romantic OTP for this character: The above, plus I like to imagine Nolan as kind of substitute dad for him and Edward? Especially since Leonardo comes from nobility, I imagine he and Nolan could talk literature together and give him some measure of comfort.
My unpopular opinion about this character: He and the rest of the DB have at least as much personality and development as some of the mercs. Not that this is saying much, but singling them out as flat? Mmm no sorry, not when other characters are just as undeveloped despite piles of text. Also, he’s almost always my best archer. Rolf beat him out only once for me.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Cut a good chunk of the Merc chapters and text. Give it to the Dawn Brigade so they actually have time to shine, as opposed to existing largely as people Ike plows over and then leads.
Alternatively, if that Tellius sequel so much of fandom wants happens? Make it entirely about them. (Added bonus: Meg cackling at bitter Micaiah-hate tears.)

this is glorious
best use ever of that stupid poofy dress
ever

I’m digging the thigh-highs, to be perfectly honest.
